History of arboriculture

The terms arboriculture and arborist were introduced in the USA in the 1930s. By that time, enough importance was already placed on trees in urban environment, and there was a need to separate a narrower branch focusing only with the maintenance of urban trees from the general forestry and forestry industry.

In 1924, the first professional association was created in USA, from which the international organization of arborists ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) has developed.

In 1992, the European Arboricultural Council (EAC) was formed, the members of which are national arborist’s associations. EAC is organizing certification exams of EUROPEAN TREEWORKER and EUROPEAN TREE TECHNICIAN, as well as developing necessary proffessional standards. .

The founding meeting of the Estonian Arborist Association (EAÜ) was held on July 1, 2008. Since 2012, we have been member of the EAC as the representative of Estonia. The members of the association are arborists, tree assessors and persons interested in the promotion of arboriculture.

There is a constant demand for professional treeworkers – arborists, and their number is growing rapidly, because planting, caring for and preserving urban trees in conditions that are often unsuitable for them requires the appropriate skills, knowledge and specialists.
